MOST OF THE HOUSES NEAR THE downtown area were smaller. Two to three bedrooms at the most. Cape cods and bungalows. When you headed out to the hills beyond the city, the houses got bigger and more ornate. This was where the “haves” of Moonstone Bay lived.

“I didn’t realize that Kirk and Selma were rich,” I said as Galen started up a winding driveway.

“They’re old,” Galen replied. “They hobnob with my mother all the time.” His tone told me he didn’t like them.

“What should I expect?”

“They’re going to be jerks. The thing is, Kirk fancies himself a law-and-order guy. If he thinks Sienna has been up to no good, he might tell me.”

“No family loyalty?”

“My understanding is that they were mortified when Elizabeth left the island. With their standing, they thought she should stay. When she started getting in trouble, I believe they bailed her out a few times. Then they cut off contact with her completely. By the time Elizabeth was facing major time, they were completely out of her life.”

“Why did they take Sienna?”

He shrugged as he pulled up in front of a huge house. “I will probably ask them just that. Maybe they thought they could succeed with Sienna and get a do-over or something.”

“Or?”

“Or they just care about appearances and didn’t want word getting out that they let her go into the system.”

I pasted on a smile and followed him to the door. It took a full minute for somebody to answer.

The woman standing on the other side had dark hair, not a speck of gray, and perfectly arched eyebrows. She was dressed in a powder pink lounge outfit that managed to look both comfy and expensive. She didn’t look happy to see us.

“I take it this isn’t a social call, Sheriff Blackwood,” she said stiffly.

“I’m afraid not,” Galen replied. “May we come in, Selma?”

She slid a questioning look to me.

“Hadley is helping with my case in her position as mayor,” Galen volunteered to her unasked question.

“I see.” Selma pushed open the door. “Come in. I guess.”

Galen went in first, and I followed. I shot what I hoped was a friendly smile in Selma’s direction, but she didn’t return it.

“This way.” Her tone was clipped as she led us through the house, not stopping until we were in an ornate parlor. It was mostly white, but the furniture accents were the same pink as her lounge outfit. “Would you like a drink?” It was obvious she didn’t want to make the offer, but manners dictated she had no choice.

“We’re good,” Galen replied. He sat on one of the settees, and I automatically lowered myself to the spot beside him. “Is Kirk here? I should probably have this discussion with both of you.”

“I’m here,” a male voice announced from the other door. A stately man, tall, with gray hair and an expensive suit, walked into the room. He extended his hand to Galen to shake but ignored me. “Does this have something to do with Sienna?” he asked as he sat next to his wife.
